Paradox of Socialism and Liberalism in India-An insight
Though India had great liberal and political philosophers like Chanakya who made a political lexicon “Arathasastra” which is a gem, a master piece, a brilliant exposition of economics by a thinker unmatched in intellectual capability for many centuries and clarity of thought, but at last we are left with socialist policies in the same land which is continually running and ruining the nation. It’s not that Indians does not know or experienced liberalism and capitalism, our ancient society had once greatly promoted and practiced these ideologies, the fading has happened during pre and post independence period and one such ruin was also by British colonial legacy. Pls read on a book by Sanjeev Sabhlok Ji of FTI “Discovery of freedom”http://www.sanjeev.sabhlokcity.com/discovery.html in which he detailed how our Hindu capitalism was and maintained economic rigidity.A detailed in sight on socialist and liberal ideologies in Indian political landscape.
1757–1947: The effect of British liberal ideas:
The strengthening of British influence in Bengal with the battle of Plassey in 1757 coincided with significant developments of thought in England (John Locke in the 1680s, Adam Smith with his monumental book in 1776, and Edmund Burke) and in the USA (Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Alexander Hamilton, among others). The English language came to India in 1603 in Akbar's time but there was then no pressing economic reason for Indian people to learn English. It was only after the consolidation of Bengal by Robert Clive and the extension of the East India Company into the Indian political landscape, that the demand for learning English began to grow. By 1835, Indians were paying serious money to be taught English, as it gave them job openings in the Company. As Thomas Babington Macaulay noted in his famous Minute: “the natives” had become “desirous to be taught English” and were no longer “desirous to be taught Sanscrit or Arabic”.
Macaulay actual quote, from his 1835 paper follows,
'It is impossible for us, with our limited means, to attempt to educate the body of
the people. We must at present do our best to form a class who may be interpreters
between us and the millions whom we govern; a class of persons, Indian in blood and
color, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect"...
Further, those who wished to, seemed to picked up English very well: "it is unusual to find, even in the literary circles of the Continent, any foreigner who can express himself in English with so much facility and correctness as we find in many Hindoos."
Those who learnt English quickly became aware of its literature, including the rapid evolution of Western political thought. This greater awareness of the advances in freedom laid the seeds for the demand for self-rule.
While people like Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1772–1833) were beginning to articulate elements of these political arguments, no one was in a position to explore and articulate new insights. However they did catch up with key liberal ideas and began implementing some of these advances thought through their new demands for greater freedom in India. While the West was firmly embedding its new political institutions, or contesting the growing forces of socialism (which had overpowered parts of the feudal and aristocratic West), the Indian intelligentsia was grappling with the challenge of the first major task ahead of it, namely independence.
As well as Raja Ram Mohan Roy, other contributors to political thought on freedom in 19th century India included Dadabhai Naoroji (1825–1917), Mahadeo Govind Ranade (1842–1901), Gopal Krishna Gokhale (1866–1915) and Pherozeshah Mehta (1845–1915). Theory led to an independence movement in India. Gandhi demonstrated through a humane, non-violent, and dignified protest, that all humans were equal and should be treated equally, including their being given the opportunity to govern themselves. This was a major advance in the theory and practice of freedom and can be argued to have had a major effect in ending the age of imperialism and the age of racial discrimination.
Nehru, who was very well-educated and fully aware of the history of liberalism, seems to have had surprisingly little faith in an individual’s ability to think and take responsibility for himself or herself. Nehru did not emphasise the importance of each individual undertaking self reflection and choosing among ethical alternatives. Possibly, in his view, making these ethical choices was too difficult for the common man. He definitely believed that these choices were best directed through state level dictates laid down by governing elites through planning. In any event, he veered toward collectivist and socialist thinking where decision making power is concentrated in the state. Decentralization, where power and freedom vests with people at the lowest levels, was anathema to Nehru. He stated in his Autobiography : “socialism is ... for me not merely an economic doctrine which I favor it is a vital creed which I hold with all my head and heart.” Indian industrialists (with their Bombay Plan) also sided with Nehru on a socialist pattern based on the Russian 5-year plan model.
Despite the environment in which socialist thought was flourishing, India was fortunate to enjoy at least a few liberties even before independence. The advances made in political institutions in England as a result of liberalism were imported and embedded into India over the decades by British rulers. Things like the right of assembly and protest under reasonable circumstances, the right to property, and freedom of expression ─ with a relatively free press, became a part and parcel of Indian political landscape before independence.
Post independence liberalism:
The 1949 Indian Constitution gave to Indians some of the liberal rights that the British and Americans had come to expect by then. In addition, India extended franchise to everyone: all adults had the right to vote in the Indian Republic. That was earlier than even most developed countries had provided to their citizens at that time.
But on most political issues, India adopted Nehru’s socialist model, that included a significant dilution in property rights, among others. The government entered businesses as its primary activity, to help it achieve the ‘commanding heights of the economy.’ Government factories sprung up quickly and began churning out shirts, watches,T.V, fridges, scooters, bicycles, milk, bread, and cheese.
While Rajaji and Masani, and economists like B.R. Shenoy advocate the greater freedom, they were unable to over-ride the Indian fascination with socialism.Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari, the second Governor-General of India, and a Bharat Ratna, was a close colleague of Nehru during the independence movement. But soon after independence he quickly began to see the risks to India of letting Nehru’s fervour with socialism go unchallenged. Despite having fought for independence by Nehru’s side, and without regard for his own advanced age (Rajaji was 80 by then), Rajaji decided to act to block Nehru’s onslaught on freedom. He formed the Freedom (Swatantra) Party, to oppose Nehru's policies. For the next 14 years till his death in 1972 he waged a battle with Nehru’s Congress to advance freedom. But as Nehru was extremely popular at that time, and also had the resources of the government at his command, Rajaji’s was inevitably a losing battle. He wrote about his Party in 1960:
“The Swatantra Party stands for the protection of the individual citizen against the increasing trespasses of the State. It is an answer to the challenge of the so-called Socialism of the Indian Congress party. It is founded on the conviction that social justice and welfare can be attained through the fostering of individual interest and individual enterprise in all fields better than through State ownership and Government control. It is based on the truth that bureaucratic management leads to loss of incentive and waste of resources. When the State trespasses beyond what is legitimately within its province, it just hands over the management from those who are interested in frugal and efficient management to bureaucracy which is untrained and uninterested except in its own survival".
"The Swatantra Party is founded on the claim that individual citizens should be free to hold their property and carry on their professions freely and through binding mutual agreements among themselves and that the State should assist and encourage in every possible way the individual in this freedom, but not seek to replace him."
Rajaji’s opposition arguably helped India minimize the excesses of socialism. His party held 44 seats in Parliament in the Fourth Lok Sabha (1967–71). Swatantra was also part of the opposition to the Nath Pai Bill that advocated primacy for the Directive Principles of State Policy over Fundamental Rights. There were many other occasions when Swatantra acted as the voice of reason in a very unreasonable time. Making use of the free press and democracy, Swatantra pressed on for freedom, regardless of the difficulties it faced, but ran out of steam in 1973.
Since then, many new thinkers such as S.Raju, Sharad Joshi, Barun Mitra, Parth Shah, Gurcharan Das, Sauvik Chakraverti,Sanjeev Sabhlok-founder of FTI and many others have emerged on the Indian liberal scene, contributing to the debate on freedom in India, and advancing classical liberalism.
Liberalism in Indian Politics:
The Indian National Congress, the flag-ship of Indian Independence Movement, was founded by liberal nationalist, like Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Almost the entire leadership of the Congress till mid-1920s was liberal in its stance. Sometime in the 1920s, the Congress leadership was taken over by socialists like Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhash Chandra Bose, forcing liberals to move into a separate platform. Gandhi however retained liberal leanings and never supported socialism. He was opposed to government taking over ownership of property. He wanted to bring responsible business (trusteeship) and local self-government.
After Independence, Swatantra Party was founded as India's Liberal Party in 1959. It was founded by Rajaji, but merged with B.K.D. led by Charan Singh. It has been India's only genuinely liberal political group so far, with a large number of seats in Parliament. This effort ended in 1973.
In January 2004 Indian liberals attempted to revive the spirit of the Swatantra Party by forming the Swantantra Bharat Party (SBP). SBP now has one seat in Parliament, namely of its President, Sharad Joshi.A minor but distinctly liberal effort, the Liberal Party of India (LPI), based on economic and political liberalism, was floated in 12 April 2005 independent to the Swatantra Bharat Party. The need for a separate party arose over a significant difference of opinion regarding the level of transparency needed in a liberal party. However, LPI wound up within a few months given only a few active members.
The Lok Satta Party launched in 2006 claims to be rooted in liberalism, but its strategy and policies are much awaited. The Jago Party launched in 2008 is a political party based on principles of liberalism and it openly supports free market economy for India. On the same grounds and a step head of all Freedom team of India(FTI)- founded in 2009 which recognizes that liberal policies and effective leadership is the utmost prime strategy for transforming India and its offering a platform for creating best leaders India needs with alignment in policies.Hence the growing spirit of liberal polices can be strengthen only when the like minded people join hands, unless the common envy cant be evaded. In the meanwhile, Indians are able to take advantage of economic liberalism now on offer from a number of 'mainstream' parties, which, however, are not grounded in philosophical liberalism.
Liberalism in Indian Economy:
After Independence, India adopted the Socialist model of development. This led to creation of Licence Raj, the elaborate licences, regulations and the accompanying red tape that were required to set up business in India. The economic liberalisation of 1991, initiated by Indian government mostly in industrial sector in response to a balance-of-payments crisis, did away with the Licence Raj and ended many public monopolies, allowing automatic approval of foreign direct investment in many sectors. However, liberalization has benefited certain sector, but still many major setbacks are in agricultural, education, manufacturing, tourism and other unorganized sectors where millions of street entrepreneurs dwell. In fact, post-liberalization, the productivity growth in agriculture has fallen behind the growth in population because of too much government intervention and poor policies in agricultural sector, which is nudging innovation.
My sincere request to the readers are to first understand the problem what our nation faces and it cant be solved without having good polices, inspite of that we are always opting and trying to replace the driver of a defective car. Here the defective car is lack of policies and system, but the driver so called BJP/Congress etc cannot drive good enough to take nation’s economy prosperous.India's current policies are not incentive compatible, and systematically generate moral hazard (cheating, criminality, losing societal values) in every aspect of public life.

Unshackle the Goddess of learning ”saraswathi”
No country can ever get developed without the citizens being literate; Talent is the greatest national resource than any other wealth which was understood vividly by Japan,Germany,U.S and china, south Korea looked at Japan and Germany who had very little mineral wealth such as ores, coal, energy in the form of gas, oil, other hydro carbons, just like south Korea (but unlike India) were developing fast, in spite of the complete 10 years of Korean war destruction, now become one of the richest nation in the world by sheer extensive hard word since it has realized the main reason was education and skill building through vocational training. A country with a size of TN has several major innovative companies like Samsung,LG,Daelim,Daewoo, doosan, hynudai,KIA,SK etc which produces electronic appliances, cars, engineering design and occupies one of the major trade partner in the world. Today after 40 years an average South Korean has an income of nearly 19,000 USD per year compared to 100 USD for an average Indian.
In India 90% to 94% drop out rate between kindergarten and 10+2.This includes those who have never been to school. The balance 10% are the ones that cross 10+2 stage, education line of control which is our so called educated youth,go in for regular college degree which may not be very relevant in today’s context for the sake of employment generation ,62% of all graduates from 22,000 colleges are arts graduates.Balance 38% in science, commerce, medical, engineering,I.T,Law and special subjects.Beyond this our youths do not have awareness or explore in other streams;where as the 80% of world youth between 14 to 35 years of age learn a vocation,a skill or trade with choice of 3000 vocational (VET)programs. In 15,000 VET modules we in India have only identified about 500 courses for 1.21 billion people and hardly 2% of population goes for the formal VET training. That is the reason in India we can get numerous engineers,Arts graduate and MBA professionals most of them are not employable in India or abroad but no carpenters, plumbers, drivers, repairmen and other specialized skilled personnel as per international standard and quality in other 2500 vocational trades too. This clearly outlines why we are rated very low in the human development index.
Rs.50,000 Crore per year is repatriated out of India for nearly 4,40,400 Indian students studying abroad. These funds are more enough to build 30 IITs or 50 IIMs per year. This alone signifies that India has potential opportunity for becoming educational hub of world, but gravely missing this by regulation and stringent control of Higher and technical education which has to be unshackled very soon as we did achieve the goddess of wealth “ Lakshmi”in 1991 that too partially not in all sector. China has about 900 universities, while we in India have 372 universities, countries like USA and Japan alone have 3650 and 4000 universities respectively. India has only 27,000 foreign students while Australia has 400,000 foreign students and Singapore 150,000 foreign students.
The problems is identified and the prevailing of poor quality in education and training will not go away by stringent government controls, but can be well achieved by decontrol and throwing away the license raj in higher education where as the westerners and other Asian tigers achieved successfully. As you know the FTI proposed governance model is “A nation with incentive based governance structure where as an economy should be market based”which has been designed by bench marking with world best nations.Market forces, supply and demand should balance the existence and growth of educational institutions. The size of enterprise cannot be decided by officials in central government for a nation with 1.21 billions people volume. They are decided by the market forces, process, technology and competitive forces.Around 300 million unemployed of employable age which is very negative undesirable human development,VET teaches the youth a skill or a competent or trade, one learns to do some skilled job!In developed countries around 80% of the youth from age 14 to 35 should go in for VET.This would mean to us India about 50 million people per year would be benefited. Except for I.T which is 2 to 2.5% of world’s GDP where there are around 50,000 private training centers operating in India. Where are the training centers to run the balance 97% of the skills, trades, competences required to run this nation????
That’s the reason from basic paper, pen, table, mouse, laptop, iPhone to heavy machinery china is able to produce very cheaply with 500,000 VET centers and 80 million people are trained and employed per year. At the present rate of growth with this governance policies, it may take more than 100 years in some areas, just to catch up china!
Conclusion:
Quality will improve only by deregulation and not by regulation and controls; Let there be 100s no 1000s of IITs or IIMs where people get benefit out from here and need not to travel abroad for studies and we can be in better position to attract world students if higher education is liberalized and encourage private sectors.
The above parameters are extracted from the article “Transforming India “authored by Mr.Krishnakhanna a Technocrat,1996 National citizen’s awardees and a relentless task master working on education(VET) as a key strategy for empowerment of India’s young population. He also networks with many organizations like TCS as their knowledge partners for using technology effectively for creating many training centers, he is in the journey of creating 100 VET centers in J&K.His innovative work on e-learning "Dynamind" can be found at http://www.i2k.in./. His actions are quite useful to society as he is paradigm of direct action. However, to bring a massive reform through policy, which is useful to everyone, then the above stressed thrust on removal of license raj in education sector is to be done; though several advisers advocated our politicians are reluctant in implementing this. Therefore, the way to achieve this through proper policy reform and this needs good leaders on board first, pls visit freedom team of India http://freedomteam.in/blog/main where its working extensively on India’s policy matter and grooming excellent leaders.
"Purpose of a government is to make it easy for the people to do good without any regulation and difficult to do evil"-This stance is well adopted by FTI's principle of governance detailed in first order and second order principles of governance.

Forgotten colossus-The Bismark of India
On December 15,62 years ago sadar vallabhbhai patel breathed his last.He really did not die.His soul lives on and the proof is the integrity of India as he achieved to bequeaths to us.Its important to recall the map of India in 1947,especially for those patriots who now recommend complete autonomy and even "anything short of azaadi"for Kashmir. The sub continent comprised three fifths territory directly ruled by British and two fifths in the hands of the princely rulers.Except for bahawalpur and one or two other princedoms that happened to be on the Pakistani side, all the rest a total of 565 of them were on the Indian side.On the lapse of British paramountcy in 1947,if they had not been amalgamated with the union of India,
what would have happened to the country?its map would have been honeycombed like a distorted sleve and its polity a cauldron of perpetual anarchy.
The threats to the amalgamation were many.Lord wavell, the second last viceroy laid recorded that Winston Churchill had favored a trifurcation of land into 3 nations namely Pakistan,Hindustan and princestan;Instigated by nawab hamidullah khan of Bhopal not only hyderabad and junagabh but also jodhpur, indore, jamnagar, baroda and tranvacore at some stage favored either joining Pakistan or forming a separate federation or becoming individual independent. But for sardar patel's masterly statesmanship, the integration of states might not have taken place. The story of Kashmir a pointer to what could have happened elsewhere but for sardar patel. sardar Patel's work has been compared to that of otto von Bismark who united the many German speaking principalities(except Austria) under the overlordship of the king Prussia. The chancellor's achievement is no doubt an outstanding landmark in the history
of Europe. Remember however, that he had to deal with far fewer princedoms or city states that the iron man sardar and that too from the vantage point of Prussian power which could,in turn overwhelm Austria in 1866 and France in 1870.Whereas sardar patel had just become a ruler after having been a freedom fighter for three decades. The Indian armed forces were still headed by British officers. Bismark's scale was national while iron man sardar task was continental in size.Yet Germany took eight to unite whereas Indian integration was delivered by iron man in two years.Had the Indians been as avid historians as the Europeans?Foolish Tamilans searching the Great leaders for this nation in this complex world economy only in cinema land-kodambakkam,albeit some worst scoundrels has found goddess from there; where as in general illiterate Indians knows only Nehru-Gandhi dynasty-The socialist gang.If this is the case how would our great iron man would have got his due respect? At last our sovereign is in despair, many Pakistanis has infiltrated in the western India and in the east a recent mass riot has happened because of bangaldeshis population mixed with the Assam native population creating chaos unemployment, social injustice and upheaval etc just motivated for the sake of vote bank politics.

Is this the disrupted India our great leaders wanted to see as their vision?Never they wanted a prosperous self governed nation where there is an equality of opportunity to all and every one is
treated equally.
Maintaining citizenship identity of racial mixed nation like us is very difficult but our nation
has continually failed 65 years to take any scientific measures to do this where as the emerging Indian Political reformer Mr.Sanjeev Sabhlok-Founder of FTI has very well said that "DNA based identity should be provided for all the Indian citizens" which he has written in his revolutionary book"Break free of Nehru"now freely available in this link http://www.sanjeev.sabhlokcity.com/breakingfreeofnehru.pdf
i would sincerely request every Indian must read this at least to know how are we now governed and how we should be living prosperously in this world.
Lets not forget the great Iron man without whom the India map would be 50% of size only remaining would have been to Pakistan and it is now the every citizens duty to possess national interest and spare some amount of you efforts for nation building. We should have
a indomitable spirit among ourselves that we should not leave a corrupt, highly unemployed, illiterate, extremely impoverished people and fading of our great society values to the next generation. The next generation people should say that those nasty evils were once faced during my father's generations.Lets create such an GREAT INDIA,pls do visit FTI site and spread this to all the Indians http://freedomteam.in/blog/main

Poor system and inefficient administrative model gives way for corruption
We are economically too much backward and the failure is due to lack of basic economics education with Indian politicians who are merely focused for their own vote banks declare freebies and false election promises to be in power, that makes it ultimately for people to suffer so badly with high inflation and corruption.
Most Indians believe that there is something wrong with the fundamental Indian character. They are wrong.
Recently I have watched a good Tamil film "sattai" also had put a few words about the film and education in my FB time line.Received a comment from one of my school mate Prave who is quite studious in school days and a prodigy too as she was the one i remember in my school days who won the Thriukural oratorical competition by orating all the 1330 verses of Thriukural in the school competition. Its awesome and those are memorable school days. The below are the conversation with prave related to educational reform.
Here's an extract from FB on our discussions:
Stalin Anbalagan:
Watched an excellent Tamil Movie "Saatai" which emphasis the stark truth about govt. school teachers,a must watch movie for all teachers&students. Also the film highlights govt teachers lack interest, highest world average of absenteeism of teachers and deliver worst results, all these problems are due to our system which is not designed as incentive driven or market based which is the crucial problem in many of the public sectors which is delivering an absolute third rated results and enormous loss to govt Exchequer. If its incentive/performance based system then both students and teachers will be benefited, but currently only govt teachers are benefited either they delivering result nor but their job is permanent which is futile and danger to govt spending on education. Incentive/Market based policy is one such needed reform in Govt education sector, unless its non sense for govt spending someone else money on someone else.
Prave:
Education and health care related professions needs more of values rather than incentive/market based reforms which are insane in insisting on such professions.
Stalin Anbalagan:
Appreciate your comments.I would like to make still more clear that my stance of "Incentive"should not be miss understood as PERKS or Additional benefits to be provided to motivate further in addition to the existing schemes-I am not voicing this.I do agree that society needs strong values and expecting from all sounds quite ideal; We all know that India has had once great Philosophers who has lived and leave a legacy for us like Mahatma Gandhi the great man who devoted his life with principles to this nation,Kamarajar another follower devoted completely to our state as epitome of how to be honest in personal and political life and list goes on...Though we have such legends we could not inspire such qualities and values in our present day society and current leaders, hence to be practical enough the western philosophers has well understood this concept"Human beings are born cheaters or opportunistic individual though values exist one side, hence the westerners well understood this concept that is where they made the system quite strong enough to punish, obey every thing as per the system, but in India we don't have any system, here money/power can influence every thing including our judicial system. This is where stringent public policy is key strategy in changing things and can make our life better, for which Mr. Sanjeev Sabhlok a prominent FTI member and former IAS officer has been sternly putting so much of efforts in framing the world best policies for India( http://sabhlokcity.com/ )". Coming to education point of view, why i mentioned incentive/market based reform is, the current public sector does not value the individual through performance or result oriented structure, any govt teacher or servants can continue till retirement though he is under performing through our bad system or surviving under the influence of thugs which is still continuing and nation is spoiling. In education even a poor parents tries to send his child to affordable private schools why?there is accountability in private market, society always seeks towards to find the best,if at all a vouchers scheme were introduced and govt teachers will be provided increment/benefits or can survive as a teacher only if he/she can deliver result through performance other wise govt teacher cant survive since his job will be in peril. This is what the smart scheme where westerners are following. We have fundamentally missed wisdom or learning from the successful countries like U.S,Japan, Germany where they adopted V.E.T/ESD Courses in schools curriculum itself and a individual can start his own enterprise or job when he just completes high school irrespective of that our govt introduced non sense scheme like until 8th standard no children should be failed, free laptops, free bicycle etc at last quality of education is third rate and though students educated cant get a job-High unemployment which in-turn causes poverty and inflation.
"V.E.T -Vocational educational training;ESD-Entrepreneurship Skill development"
To conclude there is "no free lunch in economics and human beings are progressive animals always aspiring to grow,if there is no stringent system built human beings will find easy opportunity or greedy way to lead their life".I am still with you regarding "values" which are most important to individuals but exhorting that alone will not fix any problems in this country.Biggest difference between westerns and Indians is westerners has well designed systems/policy to curb corruption etc and strictly bring any culprit even CEO or Highest rank of country under law and order, but Indians don't have proper system which could make politicians or any govt servants accountable or to punish, even after 30 years we could not get compensation for methyl ISO-cyanide gas leak affected victims, where BP has spilled oil in U.S sea coast and it hardly affected only the aquatic life but U.S has put the boot on the neck of BP C.E.O to demand billions of dollar as compensation-this is one such example for system.Pls understand that everyone cant be like M. Gandhi,S.C.Bose,Kamarajar or V.O.Chidambaram Pillai etc who devoted their entire life to build nation, but for ordinary civilians to survive policy and system should be in place and it should be designed in a way where it does favor to anyone.

Conclusion:
The Indian is no more nor any less susceptible to opportunism as any other human being in this world. The difference is that Western thinkers have realised that most of them are natural born cheaters, and have developed theories, models, and systems to control such behaviour. In India, however, we have UTTER FOOLS (socialists) who believe in exhortation against corruption. Exhortation is the WORST method to bring integrity into public life.Hence lets all join hands in creating a better system and reclaim the glory of this great nation.Pls do visit http://freedomteam.in/blog/main
